You're absolutely right. As much as I enjoy other more recognized figures in 20th century music, Milhaud and Poulenc remain two of the most underrated composers of the century.

My favorite piece of all, but this performance misses the mark. Get the old Durufle/Pretre recording. It is far, far better than this. It was done under Poulenc's personal supervision. Everything is right. In most other recordings, the conductor and organist just don't seem to get it. Here, you can tell right from the opening bars that Murray is going to murder the piece, and he does. Get the old Angel recording, and throw this one in the shredder.

What a great piece this is! Whenever I hear pretty much any work by Poulenc or Milhaud I can't help but feel extreme satisfaction. Those Frenchmen just had the gift.
